Treating Anxiety By Natural Methods

It’s estimated almost 20 percent of people in the US suffer from anxiety to some extent; many don’t realize it’s an issue or just don’t bother to get treatment. And of course, it can affect your work, social life, family relationships and can potentially lead to heart issues, depression and in some cases, suicide.

Medication and Therapy

There are various medications available for treating anxiety, and many people also get help from therapy or counseling. Often, it’s a question of identifying the underlying causes of what’s making someone anxious and then addressing those issues. There are also various ways of treating anxiety naturally, although the effectiveness can vary, based on the individual and the level of anxiety being experienced.

Regular Exercise

Exercise helps to release endorphins in the body, the hormones that are responsible for how we feel, and exercising is one of the easiest yet most effective ways of treating anxiety naturally. And of course, it’s also good for your physical health too. Exercising to fight anxiety doesn’t need to be a strenuous workout, it can be as simple as walking, jogging, cycling or a yoga session. If you smoke, or drink heavily, giving one or both up can also help; too much alcohol or nicotine actually adds to your anxiety. A weighted blanket may not sound comfortable, but it can actually help your body to rest, alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Breathing and Meditation

Deep breathing can help if you’re feeling anxious, and is a proven method for calming anyone who is having a panic attack. Shallow and fast breathing can actually increase the chances of a panic attack, whereas slow, deep breaths can help to relax you. Anybody can learn to meditate, which involves focusing on a calm or peaceful scenario, and it’s a proven method of relaxation, one that has been practiced for thousands of years.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are another effective option for treating anxiety, and they can be used in a diffuser or applied to the skin; either method can help to relieve anxiety and stress, and also help with insomnia. Some of the best essential oils when it comes to treating anxiety are grapefruit, lavender, chamomile and bergamot. CBD oil, which is derived from compounds present in cannabis plants, is becoming increasingly accepted not just to treat anxiety, but for arthritis, sleep disorders and allergies.

Minerals and Herbs

There are also various herbs and minerals you may want to try, if you suffer from anxiety. St. John’s wort has long been recognized for its ability to fight depression and anxiety, and green tea is known for being able to induce those positive feelings. Lemon balm is also able to induce positive feelings, and valerian root is well known for being able to regulate hormone levels and calm the body’s central nervous system. Another herb that can boost your overall mood and fight loneliness and depression is Gingko Biloba.

Simply doing something enjoyable can help to fight anxiety, including spending time with friends, listening to music, reading or just sitting soaking up the sun.
