Published On December 8, 2020 | By Andrew Williams | Health

Online Psychotherapy is aimed at people who want to use the services of a psychotherapist, but for various reasons cannot hold a session in a traditional way or are afraid of a direct meeting.

Online therapy is also a way to continue meetings with a therapist we already know, but coming to the office has become problematic. Check how online therapy works and how to find the right therapist.

Online psychotherapy – is it effective?

There are many definitions of psychotherapy, but most of them emphasize the constant cooperation of the expert with the patient, aimed at a satisfactory change in himself, his behavior or life situation. Online psychotherapy is the provision of therapeutic services by a psychologist or psychotherapist remotely, via the Internet.

Theoretically , online therapy differs from the traditional one, which consists in direct contact with the patient, only in the form of communication, however, it causes controversy among psychologists and psychotherapists, especially in Poland. It finds both supporters and opponents.

Opponents of online therapy postulate that physical contact is extremely important, because not only does it enable careful observation of the patient, but also allows for the exchange of emotions, which is not possible over the phone or even video messaging.

Advocates, on the other hand, argue that the therapist’s relationship with the patient established via the Internet may be as deep as it was through direct contact.

What does scientific research say about this?

Research conducted by Israeli scientists on a group of almost 10,000 patients shows that the effectiveness of Internet therapy is comparable to that carried out in a traditional way.

The overall weighted average effect size of online therapy during the study was 0.53, which is close to the average effect size of traditional direct therapy.

How to find an online psychotherapist?

How to find a  good online psychotherapist ? After entering the correct phrase in the search engine field – for example, psychotherapy via the Internet , we will see a whole lot of offers.

When choosing the right specialist, we should take into account his qualifications, experience, and the field in which he specializes. Currently, one of the most popular and, at the same time, the most effective approaches in contemporary psychology is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

The therapist should also clearly explain the principles of providing services. The patient has no doubts as to how long the visit lasts, through which medium it takes place, as well as how much it costs and how to pay the fee.

The cost of advice, usually lasting 50 minutes, usually ranges from PLN 100-200. Price differences depend largely on the competence and experience of the therapist.

Who is online therapy for?

Online psychotherapy is aimed at people who want to use the services of a psychotherapist, but for various reasons cannot or do not want to conduct sessions in a traditional way. However, it is worth emphasizing that not every psychological problem can be treated remotely, and specialists agree on this.

In case of serious psychological problems, direct therapy or hospitalization is prescribed. Usually, psychological help via the Internet is provided to patients who cannot cope with difficult personal, family, partner, social and professional situations. In addition, online therapists often help with alcohol or drug addiction problems.

Internet therapy will also be a good solution in an epidemic emergency. Currently, the entire world is facing the infectious COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Many employees use the remote work system.

This also applies to psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists. Online therapy has become the only continuation of therapy for many patients. It is also recommended for new patients who experience fear, anxiety or an emotional crisis due to the current epidemic situation.
